2020 could be a strong year for the UK’s purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) sector, according to a report (1) from global real estate firm JLL. World-class universities in the UK are a favourable choice for international students in pursuit of higher education and JLL predicts full-time student numbers to rise by a further half a million by 2030.
According to JLL’s Student Housing Report (2), investor appetite remains robust due to PBSA’s defensive, income-producing characteristics.
Join us in this fireside chat with CBRE’s Director Yin Yeung, as well as Associate Director Kirsten Dyer and Associate Director Riah Patel, as they provide more insights into the demand and supply of PBSA in key UK cities. They will also share how the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic may impact trends in student housing as well as the latest Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) numbers and their expected impact on UK student accommodation.

Dr. Tan has over 29 years of experience in real estate investments and asset management across various sectors globally. He previously served as the CEO of Sime Darby Real Estate Management Pte Ltd and concurrently as the Chief Investment Officer for its Property Group. Before his appointment with Sime Darby Property Berhad, he also held executive appointments as Executive Director of Colliers International (Singapore) Pte Ltd and Managing Director (Business Development & International Business) with CapitaLand Pte Ltd.

Ms Dyer leads the analytics and insight division in the Student Accommodation Valuation & Advisory team, having joined in 2017. She specialises in deriving analytical insight to support strategic decision making. She has provided specialist analytical insight on the student accommodation sector to a varied group of market participants including universities, banks, private operators and developers.
Associate Director, CBRE
Ms. Patel is an Associate Director and joined CBRE’s Student Accommodation Valuation & Advisory team in April 2019. She has five years of commercial real estate experience and has undertaken instructions in the UK and European student accommodation sector. She is the account valuer for the iQ Student Accommodation portfolio and the GSA Ireland portfolio.
Mr. Yeung joined CBRE’s Student Accommodation Valuation and Advisory team in 2013. He is a key senior team member and provides advice to a variety of stakeholders in the student housing sector including developers, operators, lenders and universities. He is the lead valuer for a number of sector funds including the Unite Student Accommodation Fund, the London Student Accommodation Venture, Curlew Student Trust, Europa Generation and GSA’s portfolios in UK and Ireland.
