Keynote: How Security Tokens Are Transforming Traditional Finance

In the past year, tokenisation projects and platforms have proliferated, and the conversation has shifted from “why tokenise” to “how to tokenise”. Traditional finance has been slow to adopt this innovative way of issuing securities, for reasons related to incumbency, legacy systems and processes, misjudgement and regulatory complexity. But there are grounds to remain hopeful about the sector’s continued development, because regulators are driving change and central bank-backed stablecoins may encourage the growth of security token projects.

Security Token Offerings Go Mainstream

2021 is a massive year for the security token industry. The global security token market cap has surpassed USD 1Bn with signs indicating exponential growth in the near future (Source: Security Token Market). Security tokens are digital representations of traditional securities such as equities, bonds, structured products, and funds. They are recorded on a blockchain to reduce the need for manual recording and processing. In doing so, there are significant benefits such as instant settlement, smart contracts, and immutability.

Security Token Offerings (STOs) are the next evolution of private capital markets innovation as more opportunities such as real estate, private unicorns, and hedge funds can be issued as Security Tokens for investors. STOs are gaining huge traction commercially with real-world projects benefiting society at large. When well regulated, STOs can be a trusted channel for issuers to raise capital efficiently, and for Accredited Investors to access top-class investment opportunities.

Here in Asia, 2021 has been a bumper year thus far with the launch of Private Equity Funds such as Partners Group, Hedge Funds, Commercial Papers, and Sustainability-Linked Bonds by various established institutions.

  • • What is the future of Security Token Offerings?
  • • What is the difference between Security Tokens and Traditional Securities?
  • • STO going mainstream: What are the notable STO deals done in 2021?
  • • How can investors benefit from STO adoption?

Transforming Private Capital Market Infrastructure with Blockchain Technology

At the time of writing, it was nearly instantaneous to trade 1 Bitcoin worth USD 55,260 on a crypto exchange. This is thanks to market infrastructure powered by blockchain technology. Take the crypto world for example – Blockchain market infrastructure operates 24/7 trading, enables smart contracts, and instant settlement, amongst many other benefits. However, most of the traditional securities market is still operating in legacy systems where securities trading could take days to settle and multiple manual processes.

Fortunately, the status quo for traditional private markets is fast-changing. 2021 will be the year we start seeing major transformations in capital market infrastructure driven by the covid pandemic and advancements by blockchain market infrastructure players.

  • • What are the benefits of transforming market infrastructure?
  • • How can we work with regulators effectively to accelerate blockchain market infrastructure adoption?
  • • What are the successful use cases so far?
  • • How should traditional financial institutions/exchanges support this transformation?

You will be hearing exclusively from industry experts Kevin Lim, Dr. Erika Rasure, Anthony Wolley and Lomi Hou. This event will be moderated by Darius Liu, Chief Operating Officer of ADDX.

Security Token Offerings progress in the pandemic

The pandemic has triggered a rush for digitization. Riding the rush, Security Tokens are now predicted to grow to $162 trillion in trading volume by 2030. Over the past year, a growing trend can be observed where a staggering number of traditional securities like stocks and bonds have started to transition into (regulated) digital securities. Innovators from around the world are driving the adoption forwards STOs one issuance at a time.

There is no stopping digitalization as it enhances the way we invest, trade, and raise capital just by simply being more accessible and efficient.

We welcome visionary leaders Baxter Hines, Alex Nascimento, and David Lee as they confer about:

  • • Why and how STOs have strived and grown under COVID?
  • • What are the advancements that have happened over the past year?
  • • What would propel the adoption of STOs in 2022 and years to come?

We analyse the catalysts that have held to this historic adoption and what the future could hold. This event will be moderated by Alexander Lee Customer Experience Manager at ADDX
